Answer #1

The correct answer is B. Prothrombin time / International Normalized Ratio (INR).

Warfarin (coumadin) is an anticoagulant drug which prevents blood clotting. Warfarin is used to prevent formation of clots in blood and blood vessels. It is mainly prescribed in patients with prosthetic heart valves, heart attack, prevents venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism. Regular monitoring of PT / INR value is an important component in the management of patients receiving warfarin treatment. The Prothrombin Time measures the time it takes a clot to form and is measured in seconds. The PT is reported as the International Normalized Ratio ( INR). INR is a standardized method of expressing PT value. It is important to monitor INR to make sure that the level of warfarin remains in the effective range. If INR is too low, blood clots will not be prevented. And if the INR is too high, there is an increased chance of bleeding.

The dose of the warfarin is adjusted according to the PT/INR blood test results.
