Question

Problem 5 A barge 20 ft wide and 40 ft long is loaded with rocks as shown below. Assume that the center of gravity of the rocks and barge is located along the centerline at the top surface of the barge. If the rocks and the barge weigh 200,000 lbf, will the barge float upright or tip over? Show your work. 8 ft 20 ft

Answer #1

Draft = W/(lby)

Where, y(water) = 62.4 lbf/ft^3

= 200000/(20*40*62.4)

= 4 ft

Draft = 4 ft < 8 ft

The barge will float stable.
