Affordable Care Act : Key points :

  • Affordable Care Act is also called as The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act , which is also combinely called as Obama Care.
  • This was enacted by 111 th United States Congress
  • This Act was signed by Barack Obama on 23rd March 2010
  • Many new provisions were inserted in to the affordable care under title 42 of the United States code
  • The structure of Medicare and Medicaid was largely retained.
  • Provision of essential health benefits such as ambulatory services, maternity, new born care services, rehabilitation,preventive paediatrics and wellness centres etc.
  • Improved health care delivery system.
  • Prevention and screening for women through contraceptives, sterilization procedures, and reproductive education
  • Preventive care through vaccinations, medical screening facilities such as colonoscopies, screening of diabetes mellitus, sexually transmitted diseases etc.
  • This law provides care under four categories of bronze, silver , gold and platinum varying premium and out pocket costs.
  • Insurers must spend 80 to 85 % of premium dollars on Health cost.
  • All the risk management programmes also were covered in favouring insurers.
  • Medicaid expansion and Medicare savings and taxes were reduced to the insurers.
  • Children's insurance programme coverage was made simple with the Act.
  • Hospital quality delivery systems were improved.
