A peripheral smear shows severe microcytic,hypochromic anemia with target cells and poikilocytosis. Emergency laboratory results revealed the following:

WBC count:8500/mm3 Mean corpuscular volume: 55fL

Hemoglobin:6 g/dL Reticulocyte count: 6%

Hematocrit:23%

1.) Is there any type of therapy, a surgical procedure or pharmaceutical intervention required?

Poikilocytosis means abnormally snapped red blood cells like sickle cell anemia, which leads to decreased oxygen carrying to cells.

* Here first we need to assess the causes for these type of Anemia.

* Mainly it is caused by vitamin deficiencies.

* like vit B12 and folic acid.

* mainly it may seen in the iron deficiency anemia due to iron deficiency.

* Magalobloblastic anemia due to deficiency of vitamin B 12 and folic acid.

* so for that we need to administer vitamins and iron supplementations.

* Along with blood transfusion.

* And if it is Thalassemia need continueous blood transfusion.

* The surgical procedures like " Bone Marrow Transplantation"

* Because the red blood production will taken place there only.

* to modify the defects we need to do bone marrow transplantation.

* pharmaceutical interventions like analgesics to reduce pain, Anti biotics to reduce infections, oxygen administration, administration of oral and intravenous fluids.

* vitamins and minerals supplementation

* and blood transfusion.
