Tibia is the longest bone int he body.It is also termed as shin bone. Tibial bone is important to support most of the body weight. The most common etiology for tibial fracture includes motor vehicle accident in which a high energy force hits the tibia, Injuries secondary to sports, assault injury. The vital symptoms of tibial shaft fracture include difficulty in walking and inability to put weight on the legs, locomotor disability.The common types of tibial fracture includes: based on location it can be classified into distal,middle and proximal fracture, based on exposure of bone classified into open or closed fracture.

Intra medullary rods are used mainly to align the broken bones and to prevent further dislocation of bones. IM rods are placed into the bone marrow canal. During the procedure a ball tipped guided wire is used to insert the nails and rods. The fluoroscopic images are used to confirm the position of the instruments. Mallet or hammer is used to drive pins into the medullary canal thereby preventing the rotation of the pins.

AMPUTATION refers to the surgical removal of the limb or extremity. It can be classified into above knee or below knee amputation. Myodesis refers to a surgical technique in amputation in which the muscles is attached to the bone directly in order to stabilize the bone.

Lateral decubitus position is most commonly used one for a patient undergoing hip replacement.
