Actions

Stimulates sympathetic nervous system; dilates bronchioles and pupils, increases heart rate and BP, vasoconstricts blood vessels, relaxes GI tract, bladder and uterus, increases blood sugar

Nursing Implications

Monitor VS, blood sugar, urine output. IV infiltrates can cause tissue necrosis. May cause nervousness, headache, tremors, palpitations, insomnia.

It should be used cautiously in patients with history of occlusive vascular disease (e.g., Buerger's or Raynaud's disease); cold injury; diabetic endarteritis, arterial embolism.

Patient/ family teaching:the nurse should advise the patient to monitor therapeutic effectiveness. In addition to improvement in vital signs and urine flow, other indices of adequate dosage and perfusion of vital organs include loss of pallor, increase in toe temperature, adequacy of nail bed capillary filling, and reversal of confusion or comatose state.
