Decompression sickness, also known as “the bends”, occurs when the human body goes from a region of high pressure to low pressure too quickly, releasing dissolved gases (mostly nitrogen) from the bloodstream as bubbles inside the body, similarly to opening a can or bottle of pop. Examples of when the bends can occur when ascending too quickly from a scuba dive or leaving a hyperbaric chamber back to atmospheric pressure. Symptoms are varied, but may include neurological damage, joint and bone pain, stroke, and inner ear damage or rupture as the bubbles move through the bloodstream or body tissues. Estimate the approximate total volume of nitrogen gas (N2 (g)) that would be released from the blood in an adult man, if he ascended from 30 m depth (P = 3.0 atm) to the surface (P = 1.0 atm). • Treat blood as if it were water to determine any necessary properties such as constants, molar mass, etc. • Assume all the gas released in the body is ideal, and composed of 97.0 mol % N2 and 3.0 mol % O2.
