Answer #1

Solution:

CaCO3 is an ionic compound. It is slightly soluble in water due to small dissociation of Ca2+ and CO3^2- ions. Water being the polar solvent creates ion-dipole interaction and hence able to dissolve CaCO3 slightly. Its solubility increases with increasing concentration of CO2 in water due to formation of bicarbonates.

On the other hand, CCl4 is a non polar solvent, hence it is unable to form ion-dipole interaction with CaCO3. Therefore, it is completely insoluble in water.
