Approximately 9.4 million food born disease case are reported in US every year.Despite considerable advances in food safety in united states during recent decades, foodborne disease outbreaks remain a serious public health problem.Major studies related to this shown that majority of the outbreaks are due to salmonella and STEC.(Shiga toxin producing Estericia Coli). The overall national reporting rate(which include multi state outbreaks) during 2009-2015 was 2.6 out break per one million population.
Food born disease outbreaks remain an important public health issue.Data collected during outbreak investigations provide insight into the foods and pathogens that cause illness and the settings and conditions in which they occur.Continued efforts must be made to track and to analyse the cause of foodborn infectios to inform targeted prevention efforts.Strengthening the capacity of state and local health departments to investigate and to report outbreaks will improve foodborn out break surveillance. It help to decrease the burden of foodborn infections through identification of foods, etiologies, outbreak settings, and specific point of contamination, which can inform intervention efforts.
Most of the limitations are majority of the foodborne infections occur outside the context of a recognised outbreak. So the degree to which the food vehicles, etiologies and location implicated in outbreaks represent the vehicles, etiologies and location of sporadic foodborne illness is unknown.and also to a certain extent, pathogens that are not known to cause illness sometimes are reported as a confirmed or suspected etiology.
