What are some of the challenges in nursing education
related to clinical practice and informatics, both in prelicensure
and in clinical practice?
USE OF INFORMATICS IN NURSING.
New technologies are being adopted by the health care in the health sector, with the introduction of health informatics in the healthcare sectors, it's easy to do an analysis of the data, collection of the data, convenient way of delivering care, managing resources properly.
every area of healthcare and now influenced by the informatics, similarly its impact is equally seen in the nursing profession as well.
although the aims and objectives of nursing care remain unchanged, informatics has just made the things organised and it helps nurses delivering care properly and accurately by managing time and resources.
advancement can be seen in nursing practices more rapidly than any other field of medicine, as nurses are the health care providers who remain with the patient for a longer period of time and they often feel the need of change to deliver best services to the client in clinical settings.
Application of nursing informatics.
1. The practice of informatics in clinical settings.
The practice of informatics allows nurses to use this skill in clinical practice, it enhances their computer-based knowledge in various ways such as, Maintenance of data, recording data, retrieval of old data, to communicate through telehealth and uses of various devices such as cardiac monitor and other monitors based on computer technology.
2. Uses of informatics.
it helps in maintaining communication with the patient and other healthcare providers, it helps in the analysis of cost as well as the budget of client's care, it also helps in recording satisfactory data.
3. Use of informatics in institutes or in educational settings.
INFORMATICS are used to deliver education in institutes of nursing or other institutes, it enhances e-learning skills, is also allow us to use various software for presentation, and also promote conference through the internet.
4. Uses in research work.
it helps in collecting information from various sources using the internet to conduct research.
There are various challenges that are faced by prelicensure and in clinical practice.
1. Adjustment with the new technology.
It becomes difficult for the old nurses and physician to get through with the informatics, it takes time for nurses to work with other nurses and with other health care professionals in a clinical setting especially when informatics are not used by all members of healthcare.
2. Informatics is not a part of continuing education.
to work with an organisation where everything is based on computer, it becomes the utmost requirement for nurses to learn informatics, there are organisations where informatics are not a part of continuing education and because of the difficulty faced by the nurses, they use to go back to the Nursing schools to develop their informatics skill along with advancement in their degrees.
3. Different designs of software used in different organisations.
Not all organisation uses the same type of software, it becomes difficult for the nurses when they work for more than one organisation or when they switch from one organisation to another.
Non-similar software designs make difficult to work in new settings, also it takes more time to work on different software.
4. Management of time.
lack of informatics knowledge takes more time of nurses in making written records and notes.
5. Not mandatory in all institutes.
As it is not applicable in all the health care sectors, few nurses know little about computers and software.
Other challenges are.
* Lack of support from the administration where nurses work or study.
* Lack of financial support to learn a new skill.
