Simple Random Sampling
If all possible samples of n objects are equally likely to occur, the sampling method is called simple random sampling.
Stratified sampling
The researcher divides the population into separate groups, called strata. Then, a probability sample (often a simple random sample ) is drawn from each group.
Stratified sampling has several advantages over simple random sampling. For example, using stratified sampling, it may be possible to reduce the sample size required to achieve a given precision. Or it may be possible to increase the precision with the same sample size.
Systematic Sampling
We create a list of every member of the population. From the list, we randomly select the first sample element from the first k elements on the population list. Thereafter, we select every kth element on the list.
Cluster Sampling
The researcher divides the population into separate groups, called clusters. Then, a simple random sample of clusters is selected from the population. The researcher conducts his analysis on data from the sampled clusters.
Compared to simple random sampling and stratified sampling , cluster sampling has advantages and disadvantages. For example, given equal sample sizes, cluster sampling usually provides less precision than either simple random sampling or stratified sampling. On the other hand, if travel costs between clusters are high, cluster sampling may be more cost-effective than the other methods.
Convenience Sample
A convenience sample is one of the main types of non-probability sampling methods. A convenience sample is made up of people who are easy to reach.
Consider the following example. A pollster interviews shoppers at a local mall. If the mall was chosen because it was a convenient site from which to solicit survey participants and/or because it was close to the pollster's home or business, this would be a convenience sample.

1. When conducting a survey, it is important to use a random sample: to get a significant result. to avoid bias and to get a representative sample. so that we can make causal conclusions. to ensure truthful answers to the survey's questions. none of the above. 2. In order to obtain a sample of undergraduate students in the United States, a simple random sample of 10 states is selected. From each of the selected states, 10 colleges or universities are...
The state Department of Public Instruction (DPI) would like to sample high school mathematics teachers to complete a survey on teaching methods. Among high school teachers some are National Board Certified (NBC) Teachers. DPI would like to talk to at least 100 of these teachers. Below are several proposed methods of obtaining this sample. For each, state which type of sampling method was used The researcher from DPI will go to the 10 closest high schools to the DPI central...
You are working on an assignment for your statistics class. You need to E Select one answer. estimate the proportion of students at your college who delay taking their first 10 points math class for at least one year. Which sampling plan will produce the most reliable results? A. Obtain a list of all students enrolled at the college. Randomly select 100 students from the list. B. O Work with the math instructors to create a list of students currently...
Questions for Exercise 34 Directions: For each of the following excerpts from journal articles, indicate whether the sample is biased or unbiased and explain your choice. In some cases, you may answer "not sure" because there is insufficient information to make a judgment. If you answer "not sure" to an item, describe the additional information you would like to have before making a choice. 1. Researchers state, "Smokers (defined as individuals smoking 10 or more cigarettes per day) were approached...

The mayor of a small city (of approximately 60,000 people) has been requested to sign off on a new casino to be built near the city. Casinos being built are usually contentious affairs as some citizens worry it can encourage gambling addiction and attract unwanted people to the community while others believe it can bring an economic boom to the city. As such, the mayor is interested in the townspeople’s view of having the new casino built; specifically whether or...

Which of the following statements is 10 points true about the sampling distribution of the sample mean (x)? Check all that apply. A. The distribution is normal regardless of the shape of the population distribution, because the sample size is large enough. B. The distribution will be normal as...
