Answer #1

Q:1. Ans :- Option (a) i.e. 1.65 is the correct answer.

Explanation :-

By using slater's rule, first calculate the Screening constant (σ) by follow the diagram. Multiply the number of electrons in the outer most shell (n) with the number i.e. 0.35 for nth shell + 0.85 for (n-1) inner shell + 1.00 for (n-2) and (n-3) shell .

Note :- Count all the electrons except one electron whose screening constant has to be calculated.

Electronic configuration of He (Z=2) = 1s2

Screening constant (σ) of 1s electron is = Number of electrons in outer most shell (n=1) shell x 0.35 + Number of electrons in inner shell (n-1=1-1=0) shell x 0.85

= 1 x 0.35 + 0 x 0.85

= 0.35

So,

Screening constant (σ) = 0.35

Also,

Effective nuclear charge (Zeff) = Atomic number (Z) - Screening constant (σ)

= 2 - 0.35

= 1.65

Therefore, option (a) is the answer.
