Show your calculations to find the number of O2 molecules you would find in the average adult female.

The only helpful things I can find in the textbooks are

-For an average-size adult human, the total blood volume is 4-5L, and makes up about 8% of body weight.

-Plasma makes of 58% of the volume of blood in females on average, so 42% is cellular portion. In the 3 components (erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets) of the cellular portion, there are 4,800,000-5,400,000 red blood cells per microliter. And each microliter of human blood contains about 5 million erythrocytes (~8 micrometers in diameter, 2 micrometers thick).

-Hemoglobin, the protein that gives erythrocytes and the blood their red color, consists of four polypeptides, each linked to a nonprotein heme group that contains an iron atom in its center (see Figure 3.17). The iron atom binds molecules as blood circulates through the lungs and releases the as blood flows through other body tissues.

-Some 2 to 3 million erythrocytes are produced in the average human each second. The lifespan of an erythrocyte in the circulatory system is about 120 days.

-Google says each Hb molecule can carry 4 oxygen molecules.

I don't know if all of this is relevant or not, but I can't figure out if I'm missing information or if I just can't figure out how to connect it properly, but if someone knows and has a second to help me, I would really, really appreciate figuring out how to find it! Thank you!!

Answer #1

1. The total blood volume in an average adult =4.7 - 5liters , the more recent resources state that the average volume of blood in adults as 4.7 liters.

2.It makes how many %of body weight = amount of blood is equal to 7% - 8% of body weight .

3.Plasma makes =55% of blood

4.Cellular components(RBC+WBC+PLATELETS) =45% of blood

5.RBC for women = 4.2 -5.4 million mcL.

6.WBC for women = 4000-11000 per microliter.

7.PLATELETS= 150000- 450000 per microliter.

8.Human bloods contain erythrocytes= erythrocyteis the other name given to RBC's = 4.2-5.4 million mcL. Diameter = 6.2 -8.2 micrometer and thickness at the thickest point = 2-2.5 micrometer.

9.Haemoglobin in females = 12-15.5gm/dl

10.Erythrocytes made each second = approximately 2.4 million of erythrocytes are made each second .

11.Lifespan of Erythrocytes= 120 days

12.Hemoglobin carry how many oxygen molecule = one hemoglobin molecule has 4 binding site for oxygen molecules. The hemoglobin has four subunits -two alpha and two beta . These subunits surrounds a central heme group that contains iron and binds one oxygen molecule , allowing each hemoglobin molecule to bind to 4 oxygen molecules.
