3.5.1: Both of the above reactions are the examples of the OXIDATIVE ADDITION REACTION

3.5.2: In Oxidative Addition Reaction, the above two substrates can be classified as follows:

(i) NON-POLAR substrate [O2], since dioxygen is the non polar one. (ii) POLAR substrate [CH3I], here the Polarization is takes place.

3.5.3: (i) In First reaction  [O2] the non polar substrate undergoes reaction by CONCERTED PATHWAY.

(ii) In the second reaction [CH3I] the polar substrate undergoes SN2 or RADICAL PATHWAY.

3.5.4: The above two reactions are differentiated by the analysis of the formed product.

In the first reaction, due to the non-polar substrate and it undergoes concerted pathway, the product is formed in the CIS FASHION.

In the second reaction, the presence of the polar substrate, and it undergoes SN2 pathway, the product formed is TRANS FASHION.
