Answer #1

1. a) constant a is greater for SO2 than Ne and constant b is greater for SO2 than Ne.

The constant b adjusts for the volume occupied by the gas molecules and it is higher in the case of SO2 as SO2 molecules are bigger than Ne and occupy more volume. Constant a gives the magnitude of attractive forces between the molecules which is greater for SO2 than Ne.

2. At constant volume, pressure is directly proportional to temperature.

P1/P2 = T1/T2

T1 = 273-19.2 = 253.8 K

T2 = 273 + 39.6 = 312.6 K

P1 = 136.2 atm

136.2/P2 = 253.8/312.6

136.2/P2 = 0.812

P2 = 167.7 atm

Pressure in Arizona = 167.7 atm
