Answer #1

1. Formula of alum = KAl(SO4)2.12 H2O

Mass of water = 12 * 18 = 216 amu

Mass of Alum salt = 39 + 27 + 2 * (32 + 4 * 16) + 12 * 18 = 474 amu

Fraction of water in alum = mass of water / mass of alum = 216 / 474 = 0.456

Fraction that is not water = 1 - 0.456 = 0.544

Mass of dehydrated salt = 0.544 * mass of hydrated salt = 0.544 * 100 = 54.4 g

2. CuSO4. 5 H2O

Mass of water = 5 * 18 = 90 amu

mass of the salt = 63.5 + 32 + 4 * 16 + 90 = 249.5 amu

Mass % of water = mass of water * 100 / mass of salt= 90 * 100 / 249.5 = 36.15%

3. Hydrate : The form of a salt that contains water molecules in the molecular formula

Anhydrous salt: The form of salt that does not contain water molecules as part of it's moleculuar formula

Water of Hydration : the number of water molecules per formula unit of the hydrate salt

% error = theoretical value - practical value / theoretical value * 100
