The bonding between Na and Cl in NaCl is an example for ionic bonding

The bonding between C and H in Methane or CH4 is an example for covalent bonding

In ionic bonding, one of the atoms transfers its electron completely to another atom. This is due to high electropositivity and electronegativity of atoms participating in the bond formation. The removal of an electron from an atom makes it a positively charged species and gaining of an electron by another atom makes it a negatively charged species.

Thus it results in the generation of counter charged ions. Now these counter charges attract by electrostatic attraction. This electrostatic force of attraction is nothing but the ionic bond.

For example in NaCl, Na losts its outermost electron to Cl and becomes Na+ and Cl gains one electron from Na and turns to Cl-. The attraction between Na+ and Cl- results in the formation of ionic bond in NaCl.

Covalent bond is a bond which is formed by the sharing of electrons between atoms in a molecule. All the four C-H bonds in methane are covalent bonds. The C-H bond pair of electrons are shared equally among carbon and hydrogens. Such type of bonds are called covalent bonds.
