A jar of candy contains 115 white, 75 green, 95 blue, 60 yellow, 45 orange, 50 pink and 55 red pieces.

  1. What is the probability of drawing a yellow?
  2. What are the odds in favor of drawing a yellow?
  3. Explain how you could have obtained the answer for number 2 by only looking at the answer from number 1. (i.e. How are probability and odds related?)

Total = 115 + 75 + 95 + 60 + 45 + 50 + 55 =

A) P(yellow) = 60/495 = 12/99

B) odds in favour = number of favorable / number of unfavorable = 60 / (495 - 60)

= 60/435

= 12/87

Odds = p/(1 - p)
