Question

1. When the odd nucleons are both particles or holes in their respective subshells, Rule 1 states that when jz - £, t i and j2 - 2E 2, then J- ljr-jal. (Note typo in book) 2. Rule 2 states that when j 1 t and j2 2 ,then J lji tjal 3. Rule 3 states that for configurations in which the odd nucleons are a combination of particles and holes, such as 36CI, J-jj2 -1 (Note typo in book) Another way to state these rules is to calculate the Nordheim number where N-0, Rule 1 N-+1, Rule 2: N-odd (particle-hole), Rule 3 what do all the symbols above represent i1 J N and these subscripts

Answer #1

N=(jp-lp)+(jn-ln)

where N=Nordheim number (this number in shell model gives the most probable value of spin for odd-odd nuclei)

j= is the representation of total angular momentum

jp=is representation of nucleons 1 (it could be any nucleon a proton or neutron ) p= here represents a proton

lp= is representing orbital angular momentum for proton

j n=is representation of nucleons 2 (it could be any nucleon a proton or neutron ) n= here represents a neutron

ln=is representing orbital angular momentum for neutron
