16. (a)The bigger the size of atom, the longer will the distance of bonds be. Among Ga and B, Ga is bigger in size so B-Cl has shorter distance.

(b) P-O has shorter bond because size of O is smaller than size of S.

17. The electronegative values of atoms are:

B= 2.04

O=3.44

P=2.19

S=2.58

N=3.04

H=2.2

F=3.98

Cl=3.16

Larger the difference between the electronegativity, more polar will the bond be.
