Respiratory therapists are the professionals who care the patients with breathing problem

Roles under various areas of health care system:

NICU - To care of newborn with breathing problem

PICU: To care of children with breathing problem, ventilator support

Operation theatre: To care of patient under anaesthesia

Casuality/ Emergency care unit- To care of patient come with breathing problem

ICU: To care of patient with oxygen support/ ventilator support

Post operative care unit : To monitor respiratory status of the post operative patients

Burns unit: To monitor respiratory status of victims

Neurology unit: To monitor respiratory status of brain dead patients

While organ transplantation: Monitor both the donors and recipients respiratory status

Responsibilities:

Monitor respiratory status of patients with breathing problem or potential to get breathing problem.

Blood sample collection for arterial blood gas analysis

Do pulmonary function test

Teach breathing exercise

Provide nebulization therapy

Do chest physiotherapy

Provide oxygen therapy

Endotracheal intubation, ventilator care and monitoring

Excessive secretion removal by suctioning

Weaning from ventilator support

Patient education regarding method to use the spirometer, inhalers
