If we instituted universal health care what would happen to the aggregate demand for health care? Why?
Answer: The aggregate demand for health care will increase at the country level if universal health care is instituted. This is called as suppliers induced demand for health care. In a research conducted by Tussing and Wojtowycz (1986), it was found that the General Practitioners of Ireland induced demand for healthcare as they were entitled to investigate both public and private patients. They were paid by the government for public patients and by individuals for private consultation. Thus the increased supply of doctors causes demand for healthcare to increase.
The research also finds that the aggregate demand for health care depends on the GDP of the country and the income elasticity of demand is more than one which shows that health care is a luxury good. More rich the country, greater will be the demand.
Since making healthcare universal increases the supply of doctors and healthcare infrastructure, the aggregate demand will increase even if per capita income remains the same.
