Data is raw facts and doesn't mean a whole lot alone. Information is the facts that have been analyzed by the process component and are more useful to the user. If I were to say that I sold 500 units, that number is data. But I want to know if that was my goal, were my intended sales areas reached, is this an improvement over last month's units, etc. Information quality is determined by if it's useful to the end users. If the end users can make intelligent and correct decisions based off of the information given, then that information is of good quality. The qualities that determine usefulness are timeliness, integration with other data and information, consistency and accuracy, and relevance.

Data is facts and figures which are not organized in any way and which provide no further information regarding patterns, context. Data is unstructured facts and figures that have the least impact on the typical manager.

For data to become information, it must be organized, categorized, calculated and sorted. Information thus paints a bigger picture; it is data but with relevance and objective. It may at times show certain trends in the environment, or even indicate a pattern of sales for a given period of time.

Information Technology is invaluable in the capacity of turning data into information more so in large companies that generate large amounts of data across various departments and functions. The human brain is mainly needed to assist in this process
