Question

/25 04 (25 marks) (a) A spool has a mass m 0.5 kg, radius r 0.1 m, moment of inertia about the center of mass Ic-4m2 2.5 x 103 kgm2. The end of the string of the spool is held at the point H with the right hand as shown in Figure Q4(a). Initially, the spool is held with the left d and the system is at rest. Answer the following questions supposing that the spool is gently released from the left hand but with the right hand still holding the string. If the right hand remains at the initial position H (the (4 marks) acceleration of the right hand (aH 0)), determine the acceleration of the center of mass (ao), angular acceleration of the spool (a), and the tension in the string (T) (ii) Determine the acceleration of the right hand (ar) such that the (4 marks) center of mass G does not move (ag 0). (ii) Determine the acceleration of the right hand (au) such that the center of mass G moves upward at constant acceleration of 0.1 (4 marks) Solution: Figure O4a)
