Question

FREE RESPONSE 1 Players of wind instruments know that it is important to warm-up their instruments for them to play in tune- that is at the desired frequency. A cold flute plays a fundamenta frequency of note A at 440 Hz when the air temp is 20 degrees C (A) How long is the tube...(At 20 degrees C 30cn the epeed of sound in air is 343 m/s) A flute l an open-open tube meter (B) Astho plyer blows air into the flute, the air hode the instrument warms up to 32 2 , increading the speed of sound to 350m/t tundamental frequency will be playod now (e) Finally, to bring the flute back to the desired 400H2 how marmust the length of the t timust be changed? Meter

Answer #1

(a) wavelength = speed / frequency

wavelength = 343 / 440

wavelength = 0.779545 m

so,

length = 0.779545 / 2

length = 0.3897 m

(b) For same wavelength

wavelength = 0.779545

so,

frequency = speed / wavelength

frequency = 448.97 Hz
