  1. If there is disagreement between IRS and taxpayer regarding treatment of an item
  2. the taxpayer receives a letter stating the deficiency and also the letter states the process to appeal
  3. Also in case the taxpayer ignores the Audit he will receive the same letter
  4. this letter is generally called 30 day letter
  5. 30 day is the period to file appeal/'Protest: to Appeals office discussing the aggrieved issue
