You are testing concentrations of dissolved metals in a lake, and find high concentrations of Mn2+ and Fe2+. Based on this, what is the likely concentration of dissolved NO3-, and why?

Mn2+ binds with two nitrates to form Mn(NO3)2.

Whereas Fe2+ does also bind with two nitrates to form Fe(NO3)2.

Hence, the concentration of NO3- is twice the total concentration of Mn2+ and Fe2+.

i.e. If the total concentration of Mn2+ and Fe2+ is x M, then the concentration of NO3- is 2x M.
