Ontologies are important in healthcare to communicate complex and detailed medical data securely and efficiently in medical information systems. The goal of an ontologies in healthcare system is to achieve a common and shared knowledge that can be easily transmitted to people and between application systems. Thus, they play a pivotal role in gaining interoperability across organizations.

OWL2 is an expressive ontology language which provides reasoning and inferencing capabilities to software applications.
