The Correlation Between Interpersonal Communication Skills of Inspection Groups and Their Conflict Management Strategies

The article being published by the three authors in this article titled “The Correlation Between Interpersonal Communication Skills of Inspection Groups and Their Conflict Management Strategies” aims at evaluating the correlation between interpersonal communication skills and conflict management strategies. This article was conducted using inspection group constituted by a number of inspectors based on the geographical and demographic dispersion of the school population in Turkey. Our author took a sample of 2493 inspectors working with in 81 provinces geographically divide into 7 regions with data collected by two questionnaires namely the “ Communication skills and Conflict management Strategies that consisted of 33 items and 32 items respectively.

The articles had an outcomes that shows a significant positive relationship with preference for the competing conflict management strategy and a significant negative relationship with preference for the accommodating conflict management strategy. The was also high correlations between interpersonal communication skills and conflict management. A high positive linear correlation (r=72) between problem solving conflict management strategy and emphatic listening, feedback, trusting. However, compromising conflict resulted in a low positive linear correlation (r=34).In addition, if conflicts are not handled properly at an early stage, the article shows that it will paralyze an organization that will results in various adverse effect that will hamper the necessary action from the organization management.

QUESTION:

Is it more meaningful to have a high positive or negative r-value correlation or for it to have a same p-value and this statistical significance? You also note a large sample size n = 2493, what effect does sample size have on statistical significance?

Answer #1

The correlation coefficient (r) value ranges from [-1, 1]. The value of -1 indicates pure negative correlation which signifies that the two variables are completely opposite in relation which means if one variable increases and the other value decreases and vice versa for pure positive correlation.

Here in the above problem, A high positive linear correlation (r=0.72) between problem solving conflict management strategy and emphatic listening, which says that problem solving conflict management is better one when compared to compromising conflict management (r=34) which has lower correlation coefficient with the same variables. Which means using the same methods problem solving conflict management will increase more when compared to compromising conflict management strategy.

b) Sample size does have a significant effect on statistical significance. Increase in sample size decreases the uncertainty and increases the confidence which results in a greater precision.

More generally, research in organizational behavior has tended to ignore the theoretical and methodological significance of context in the examination of work attitudes and outcomes (Johns, 2006).
