Question

you want to know whether or not minutes spent exercising per day is correlated with minutes spent talking on the phone per day. You performed descriptive analyses and found that minutes spent talking on the phone was skewed for the overall sample (skewness = 2.81) and minutes spent exercising was approximately normally distributed for the overall sample (skewness = .30). You decided to perform a Spearman Rho correlation.

a) Explain why Spearman Rho was the best test to choose for this question.

b) Using the output above, describe what the correlation coefficient and sig. (p value) from the analysis tell you.

Answer #1

a) Here we can observe that we found that found that minutes spent talking on the phone was skewed for the overall sample (skewness = 2.81). So it leads asymmetric data. Hence it follows non-parametric methods. So for finding the relationship between non-parametric data we have to use spearman's rank correlation.

b) From the output, we can observe that the correlation coefficient between minutes spent exercising per day and minutes spent talking on the phone per day is -0.094 (negative correlation) and the 'p' value was found to be 0.506 > 0.05

Hence there was an insignificant (p>0.05) inverse relationship between minutes spent exercising per day and minutes spent talking on the phone per day.

Imagine that you are next interested in discovering whether or not there are differences in minutes spent exercising per day between males (coded as “1”) and females (coded as “2”) in your sample. You hypothesize that males exercise more minutes per day than females. You performed descriptive analyses and found that minutes spent exercising was approximately normally distributed in both groups (skewness = .26 for males, skewness = .07 for females). You therefore decided to perform an independent samples t...
