Nurses are at great risk of acquiring infections because they come in contact with a large number and variety of pathogens.Skin contact ,mucus membrane contact,and puncture wounds often serve as portals of entry.Exposure to blood,body secretions requires immediate action .The first step is to minimize the exposure .Nurses who become exposed to blood borne pathogens should have baseline lab work conducted to check for hepatitis and HIV .Subsequent testing and possible prophylactic treatment are based on the type of exposure and what is known about the source and the injured person.
