Ans;

1.age related hearing loss.(presbycusis) is defined progressive and irreversible bilateral symmetrical age-related sensorineural hearing loss resulting from degeneration of the cochlea or associated structures of the inner ear or auditory nerves. The hearing loss is most marked at higher frequencies.

2. Treatment includes,

a;Cochleal implants: This is an electronic device that replaces the cochlea of the inner ear. Electrodes are typically inserted through the round window of the cochlea, into the fluid-filled scala tympani. They stimulate the peripheral axons of the primary auditory neurons, which then send information to the brain via the auditory nerve

b; Middle ear implants: These are surgically implanted hearing aids inserted onto the middle ear. These aids work by directly vibrating the ossicles, and are cosmetically favorable due to their hidden nature.

c; Hearing aids and other devices: These are wearable sound- amplifying devices that are intended to compensate for impaired hearing. The goal of treatment with well-fitted hearing aids is to improve the audibility of even soft speech or music and other sounds while ensuring that sounds do not become uncomfortably loud.

d; Aural rehabilitation for the affected person and their communication partners may reduce the impact on communication. Techniques such as squarely facing the affected person, enunciating, ensuring adequate light, minimizing noise in the environment, and using contextual cues are used to improve comprehension.

There are no recommened pharmacological treatment for presbycusis.

3. Prognosis is poor and hearing progressively detiorates with time.Other than the mangements sited above,the patient can be advised to,

  • Avoid loud noises
  • Wear hearing protection devices when exposed to loud noise e.g. ear plugs
  • Speech reading training
  • Assistive devices e.g. telephone amplifiers
  • Advise friends and family members so they can take measures to improve communication e.g. talking clearly, facing the person when talking, minimize background noises during conversations etc.
