Solution

Eckert Company

Determination of the target cost:

Target cost = maximum price per unit – return on investment per unit

Return on investment = $10,355,000 x 20% = $2,071,000

Expected units = 109,000 laser guns

Return on investment per unit = $2,071,000/109,000 = $19

Maximum price per unit = $93

Target cost = maximum price – return on investment per unit

= $93 - $19 = $74

Hence, the target cost per unit - $74
