The various provincial sales taxes are applied to every individual at a fixed rate as a percentage of the price of the goods or services purchased. Therefore, when a poorer and a richer household both pay an equal amount of tax for purchasing a good, the tax paid as a proportion of income is higher for the poorer household and lower for the richer household.
