She noticed that when lying with her hips flexed, she found it very hard to stretch out her legs. Within a day her condition deteriorated, she experienced a tonic-clonic seizure, and she was quickly admitted to the hospital. Tests revealed increased intracranial pressure, fever, and leukocytosis. Bacterial meningitis was suspected, and a lumbar puncture was scheduled.

Causes of meningitis are:

  • neisseria meningitidis
  • Hemophilus influenzae
  • streptococcal pneumonia
  • group b streptococci
  • e coli
  • Listeria monocytogenes

In this case, microbe most probably is streptococcal pneumoniae as it is the common cause in this age group.

Transmission of bacterial meningitis

It is communicable through droplet of respiratory or throat secretions. Coughing, sneezing and kissing spread the infection. Being in crowded places increase the risk of getting it.

recommendations to protect others

  • Advising others for frequent handwash
  • Dont share toothbrushes, lip balms or utensils etc
  • Covering mouth with mask
  • Maintaining immune system by taking healthy diet, exercises etc
  • others may get vaccinations also to avoid getting infection
