Jody is a 5-year-old who was in an automobile accident with her mother. She was in the back seat and not wearing her seat belt. She was thrown forward and hit the front seat, resulting in a head injury. She has been diagnosed with diabetes insipidus (DI) because of the head injury.


DI is a common complication of head injury.

1)Diabetes insipidus (DI) Is a common complication of head injury

Answer-Damage to the pituitary gland or hypothalamus from surgery ,a tumor,a HEAD INJURY or illness can cause central diabetes insipidus by affecting the usual production ,storage and release of ADH.An inherited genetic disease can also cause this condition.Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

2)Identify the symptoms below that are associated with DI?

The symptoms of diabetes insipidus include Extreme thirst that can't be quenched (polydispsia),Excessive amounts of urine(polyuria),colourless urine instead of pale yellow,Walking frequently through the night to urinate,dry skin,constipation,weak muscles and bed wetting,Poliphagia.

3)What medication is given to jody for the treatment for DI

Vasopressin can give ,the reason for administration of this medication is DI causes hyposecreation of the antidiuretic hormone(ADH)known as vasopressin .Replacement is needed to manage DI.

4)What effects are seen from the altered pituitary secreation in child with a head injury?

Growth hormone deficiency and permanent hypopituitarism ,endocrine deficiencies can seen with altered pitutaru secretion in child with head injury.
