--Major reason for the birth defects are the Maternal risk factors such as the mental health, overweight and underweight, infectious diseases,chronic diseases ,deficiency of the nutrients an anemia, hypertension, stress ,pregnancy in the older age etc.

** According to the Action plan for Global Strategy for the Prevention and control of non communicable diseases ,there is a greater importance for the prevention or reducing birth defects.The world health organization said around seventy percentage of the birth defects can be prevented if we are using evidence based community services.
** Here these genetic services on standing at the community level they will try to prevent the genetic diseases by proper diagnosis and care.And the community genetic services are aiming to widely increase the chance for getting healthy babies.
** Many cultural, social and religious issues are playing an important role in managing birth defects.And now the india has reduced the IMR to 47/1000 live birth.some of the states of india like Kerala, Tamilnadu, Goa, Delhi, Maharashtra has got an IMR which is less than 30/1000.
** The community genetic services are started based on , the states which has been already achieved the national goal of IMR and in the other hand the states not achieved the national goal.
** The plans for the prevention and management of the birth defects are :
-- periconceptional folic acid supplementation for avoiding the NTD.
-- Preventing inborn hypothyroidism by the neonatal screenings.
-- Do carrier screening and manage the hemoglobinopathies and also the prenatal diagnosis.
-- Take around 400 micrograms of folic acid per day because it avoids the important birth defects of infants spine and brain.
-- Just ask the advice of your health care professional before starting or stopping of any kind of medicine.
-- Take all the vaccines up to date, because it protects you and your developing infant to fight against major diseases.Especially take the whooping cough vaccine and the flu shot in you every single pregnancy for you and your child protection.
-- Avoid using injurious substance like tobacco and alcohol for getting a healthy atmosphere for you and your child.
