Most age differences are the legacy of the times people grew up in at any given time. Many Millennials have parents who are Baby Boomers and Boomers who have expressed to their children that thinking for themselves is important–that they find their own moral compass. That's at odds with institutions that have a long history of official instruction and obedience, including the churches. And in this cultural context, Millennials have been and continue to be formed, more than any other group. This makes them more likely to have a "do - it-yourself" attitude towards religion.

As for the Catholic Church–lack of confidence is exacerbated by the church's sexual abuse scandals. What we see across all denominations is a gap emerging between politically liberal and moderate youth, and leadership among conservative churches that take political stands on abortion, and other social issues.

Generational disparities in attitudes towards the role that religion has played in the lives of individuals is focused on the immersion of a group into American culture. The waves of immigrants brought new religious diversity into many churches and synagogues which helped shape new forms of Christianity and Judaism. First generation immigrants, for example, base their religious identity on factors that bound them to their homeland.
