*Child neglect is a most common form of maltreatment
*It is the negligent treatment or maltreatment of a child by a
parent or a caretaker under circumstances, indicating harm or
threatened harm to the child's health or welfare.
*Failure to take care of a child's basic needs
*Parents are supposed to take care of a child's housing, medical
needs, clothing, love.
Major causes of neglect:
*Economic cause: neglect is caused by stress as a result of
living in poverty

Ecological cause: Views family behavior and neglect as a result of

characteristics of the caretakers.
