Molly is an active 14-year-old girl. She has just started her freshman year of high school and is participating in many school activities. This includes playing on the volleyball team. In order to make the junior varsity team, she has been training extra hard and drinking extra fluids. Her mom believes this is the cause of her weight loss and frequent trips to the bathroom.

On a trip to the mall to buy smaller jeans, Molly collapses. When the EMTs arrive, they notice that she has a fruity smell. Her mother states that her daughter has been wearing more makeup and perfume since entering high school. She is transported to the emergency room.

The diagnosis seems to be juvenile diabetes

The symptoms like polyuria (frequent trips to bathroom ),polydipdia (drinking extra fluids),fruity smell, dizziness,weight loss suggests doubt for diagnosis

The following test

  • Random blood sugar: May be hypoglycemic which lead to collapse
  • Fasting and post prandial blood sugar to assess the sugar levels
  • HbA1c to know the last three months sugar level
  • Urine glucose test

The etiology seem to be the life style (high activity level)and diet alterations (drinking calories filled drinks which are non healthy
