In the story "The Use of force", William Carlos Williams describes the experience of a doctor who was forced to use “force” in examining a child. A doctor visited the child with high fever for three days on request of her parents. The doctor suspected the case of diphtheria as there were many prevalent cases. The child was resistant irrespective of the parents and doctors effort, so the doctor used the patience first and then forced to examine the child and concluded that she had diphtheria. The violent behaviour of the child provoked the doctor to use force and he decided to use it in order to protect the child.

In the story, the writer describes that the violent behaviour of the child demanded the doctor to use force and at some point, the doctor enjoyed the preying while he was applying force on the child. The child had the revealed great resistance as the doctor was trying to reveal her secret.

In the professional life nurses also experience resistance from patients in many situations. The use of force in favour of patients can be justifiable. The situation must demand the use of force and the nurse must be able to prove the situation demands the action.

Healthcare providers can also use force to protect themselves from harm. The employer must provide a healthy environment for working. The equipment’s and supplies used to protect the patient must not harm the healthcare provider.

Nurses will also be demanded to use the force in a day to day care in many situations. The use of force when it is necessary and in favour of the patient will be justifiable. Force can be used when it is reasonably necessary for the circumstance.

The use of force must not be life-threatening or cause severe injury to the patient. While using force on the patient the nurse must act based on the ethical principles of the profession. The dignity and individuality of the patient must be preserved in all situations.

In some situations, nurses have to use restraints to protect themselves, or the patient or other patients. The use of force or restraint within the professional limit is justifiable.

The force must not be used as a punishment. The nurse can utilize the help of force to protect a patient with mental illness when the patient possesses a chance to harm other patients or other healthcare providers. Patients with mental illness will be agitated or disoriented and may cause injury to the staff or other patients. This must be tackled with the utmost care. The necessity to use force must be assessed thoroughly. The different methods of restraints can be used to protect others and patient from the injury.

If the patient resists the treatment in case of emergencies, the healthcare professional can apply force to save the life of the patient. The duty of the nurse to save life must be done even in case of resistance. The situation demanded force is justifiable if the nurse could prove it.
