Mary and Claire carefully scoop up dirt with their small trowels and place it in their pails, preparing a neat bed for their seeds. Jeff and James, on the other hand, dig into the soft dirt with their hands and toss it aside, letting it fall where it will. James, suddenly bored with the activity, decides to join other children at the swings and stands up quickly. Unfortunately, the short fence surrounding the garden catches him on the legs and sends the boy sprawling. Unhurt, James runs to his friend Dan at the swings. Meanwhile, Jeff is unaware that James has left, and he continues tossing the dirt about. One of Jeff’s tosses inadvertently lands directly on Mary’s neat seed bed and partially on Mary, and she gives a loud cry of despair. The teacher’s attention is directed to the area at this point and she quickly moves in. The teacher hugs Mary and consoles her as best she can. Eventually, Jeff is directed to another activity, and soon all four children are busily involved in new tasks — the garden incident is forgotten by all.
