Patient-centered care is a very important part of today’s healthcare setting. When a company focuses on this type of care, they will see many benefits, including increased patient satisfaction, employee job satisfaction and better outcomes. At the heart of patient-centered care is cultural competence. According to Lehman, Fenze, Hollinger-Smith, “A health care professional who has learned cultural competence engages in assistive, supportive, facilitative, or enabling acts that are tailor-made to fit with individual, group, or institutional cultural values, beliefs, and lifeways in order to provide quality health care.”

I have witnessed an example of this in the facility where I work. We are in a small, rural area, predominantly white, with very few people of other cultures. A couple of years ago, we had a gentleman who only spoke Spanish come in to our facility. No one there spoke Spanish and it was very frustrating for everyone involved. The people at the front desk were able to scramble and find an interpreter the patient could talk to over the phone, but it really showed where we were severely lacking in an area of customer service. We now have a staff member who can speak Spanish and a company we use that we can get a hold of immediately when a situation like that comes up again.

Another example would be if a provider practices in an area where there is a strong cultural presence they would need to be familiar with that culture’s beliefs and preferences.
