Hernia is the protrusion of internal organs or parts through The abdominal cavity.

The following are the objective data which can be collected using inspection and palpation for hernia

Inspection

  • The patient is asked to stand and cough or strain exposing the abdomen,the presence of hernia will make a "protrusion" making the assessment for hernia diagnosis (both make and female).It is also called as Valsalva manoeuvre.
  • Superficial lesions can be noted due to swelling of multiple lymphnode
  • Dermatological problems are visible
  • Scar on abdomen and at groin
  • Can not testicular lump or swelling
  • Asymmetric abdomen

Palpation

  • When the hernia is gently pushed in it is reducible
  • Most of the hernia are painless on palpation
  • In male patient ,the examiner inverts the testicular sac on each side,instructing the patient to cough, using the index finger the examiner enters the inguinal area along the pathway of the cord structure ,upon bulging The examiner assesses for hernia
