Schizophrenia is a mental health problem that affects a person's ability to think,feel and behavioral pattern.it can lead to significant social or occupational dysfunction.
More than 1 millions cases per year in india arises.this mental health disorder occurs in Adolescence or eaarly adulthood (16 to 30 year).
Causes: 1.genetic inheritance
2 chemical imbalance that is caused by imbalance of neurotransmitter named dopamine and serotonin.
3.weak family relationship s
4.environmental factors that s stress,divorce,unemployment can cause schizophrenia.
Types: there are several types such as paranoid (characterized by false belief of client),disorganized (person having disoriented thoughts),catatonic (person having extreme peculiar motor activities),childhood schizophrenia (at the age of 10 yr),schizoaffective disorder(person having delusion and hallucinations)
Symptoms: psychotic symptoms including delusion(they feel tht others are trying to control them)and hallucinations (hearing unusual voices).
Negative symptoms such as absence of facial expressions,lack of motivation (it s called avolition)
Cognitive thought changes
Emotional disorganized symptoms
The person affected with schizophrenia may have social withdrawal symptoms very often.
They often do not think that they are ill so they refused to take medicine.
Some patients may have the above symptoms very clear but aome may dont have it.
Treatment:antipsychotic drugs(haloperidol,olanzapine,risperidone)can be used for them.
Apart from that psychological counselling and self help resources can be used for the victims.
Ethical issues-sometimes schizophrenia can be accompanied with neuropsychological deficits.
There are five contexts in which the value of respecting the autonomy of patients with this disease may be in conflict with the values of doing good (Beneficience),avoiding harm(non Malficience).psychriatrists treating patients with schizophrenia may face some ethical conflicts.during psychological councelling of these patients telling half truth to the paranoid patients,showing accepting tenfency to the withdrawal patients can help them often.
