a) What is an infection and how does it affect the body?
b) what are common alterations related to infection?
a) Infection is a disorder caused by invasion of foreign bodies into the human body which then grows and multiply within the host causing harm to the host. Infection causing agents are known as pathogens. Some of the infectious agents are bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites.
Infectious disease are communicable and can transmit through air, water, food or vector.
Infectious diseases affects multiple organ system. They affect the immune system of the host and infects the cell by hampering normal cellular respiration through production of toxins leading to cell death. Symptoms of infection includes fever, chills, body aches and joint pains, fatigue, lethargy, loss of appetite.
b) Infection starts with invasion of foreign body into the host. The host produces an immune response to kill the infectious agent. The pathogen disables the immune system through toxin productions. it adheres to the cell surface and continues to grow and survive in the cell. When the pathogen carries out its biological processes to survive within the host cell it utilises the oxygen and releases toxins and free radicals which leads to cell hypoxia and cell death. This results in tissue damage and ultimately organ failure.
