3. Define the four types of wound drainage:

Answer : Wound drainage is basically the discharge of fluid that is produced by the body in response to any type of wound. This drainage helps us to determine the condition of the wound.The different types of wound drainage are as follows:

1) Serous drainage : This is the type of drainage produced when there is any kind of inflammation in the wound that is under its healing process. It seems to be like thin and watery plasma and its small discharge is considered to be normal but its excess production can cause something called bioburden which is a case involving contamination of wound with microorganism which will indirectly effect the healing rate.

2) Purulent drainage : This is a type of drainage produced when there is any kind of infection in the wound and this could be because of pathogenic microorganism invading the wound or the affected area. It is thicker in consistency and appears milky, and it can also be brown, gray green or yellow in appearance and also has a pungent or musty odor.This requires urgent treatment or it can make the wound even worse like it could lead to tetanus, or bone marrow infection,etc.

3) Serosanguineous drainage : This is a type of drainage produced when the wound is in the process of healing. It is thin, watery and is pink to dark red in color which is due the affect of blood cells in the fluid. This discharge is commonly observed when we change the wound dressing. If the color of discharge becomes deeper then there could be chances of active bleeding or reopening of wound.

4) Sanguineous drainage : This type of drainage is produced when the wound is fresh. It is basically the red blood that oozes out from the freshly formed wound which later on it forms a clot. It is red in color and has thick consistency. This drainage occurs mostly when the wound is under healing process. And if this drainage occurs later on that means some times after the formation of wound then it is an indication of  slow healing of the wound and if you remove the dressing or the bandage applied on the wound then it can cause reopening of the wound and thereby effecting the healing process.
