I believe the object of this petition was to see that African people were the same as white slave owners during this time. The authors know that it is against Christianity's view of what is right and what is wrong to be enslaved. The Enlightenment principle that this petition invokes is that of all people are entitled to rights by just being a human being. In the article it states, "we have in common with all other men a naturel right to our freedoms without Being deprid of them by our fellow men as we are a freeborn Pepel and have never forfeited this Blessing by anex compact or agreement whatever." (Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society.) Many of the slave owners regarded the slaves as their property and not actual people. This petition called on the lawmakers to consider them humans, because that is what they were. That the slaves never relinquished their freedom to anyone and that they should be regarded as humans. The significance of the slaves' vow to go back to Africa is to return to the place that they were.SO harshly taken from many years ago. A place where their ancestors lived and a place where they would have been asserted in that society. I do not believe that most African Americans during that time would have followed the authors back to Africa because people are creatures of habit and change is uncomfortable for anyone. A change such as deserting a place that they have known their entire lives would have been quite unsettling. The adjustment in cultures and traditions would have made many of the people want to come back to the United States. Slaves during this time just wanted to be free from the bondages of slavery.

The Slaves petition the Governor of Massachusetts to end slavery as this article mentioned that the slavery is unlawful act. Many of the slave owners regarded the slaves as their property and not actual people. Slavery is always considered improper act and should be banned.
