Ethnicity-Does the client identify with a particular group? Where was client born? How long in this country?

Communication- language? communicate in english, written and spoken? Client speak for self or defer to another? Nonverbal communication? (touching, eye contact

Space- observe client's proximity. how does client react to nurse's movement towards them? Assess client's physical environment.

Social Organization- what are client's roles? Are they primary decision maker for healthcare behaviors? Who else must they consult to make health decisions? Other family members important? Cultural or religious leaders? Religious affiliation as well as cultural?

Time- past, present or future oriented? significance of time for client? Talk about time in specifics or generalities?

Environmental Control- How is health defined by culture? What does client believe to be cause of illness or health concern? Has client used services of cultural healers? Healing practices used? amulets or artifacts?

Biological Variation- normal variations in anatomic characteristics? Dietary preferences? Are they related to ethnicity? Any nutritional deficiencies because of ethnic diet? Variation in physiologic functioning? Illness or diseases that client is at risk b/c of ethnicity or race?
