Donald O'Reilly, archeological advocate, has said, "We see tourism and film as the best way to preserve Cambodia's rich archaeological heritage." In contrast, John Stubbs of the World Monuments Fund has said, "Tourism is already out of control, and unless the Cambodian government takes some pretty radical action to rein it in much of Angkor's magic and heritage could be lost forever." And documentary film writer and director, Mikal Ansessi believes that film is the only way to preserve and share magnificent world wonders with the everyday person. Given your knowledge of the forces currently affecting our world (historical, economic, political, social, environmental, etc.), do you think it is possible for Cambodia to preserve its cultural heritage through tourism and film? Support your opinion with evidence of your knowledge of the forces affecting this issue. Can film and tourism help or hinder the dilemma?
I support with Donald O Reily's argument that tourism and film as the best way to preserve cambodia's rich archaeological heritage. Cambodia is a small South East Asian country with a past of Khmer Empire, has three major world heritage sites.
Archaeological preservation, film and tourism as being professions , have complementary dependents. From films and tourism a country can earn and extra ordinary income or receipts under leisure activities. These receives can be used for the conservation of Archaeological monuments and archaeological sites without depending on any other source of income aur opportunity cost for the country. Since being a small country this kind of incomes will be an asset for the country.
Film and tourism address the problem of unemployment too. Since film and tourism generates employment opportunities for the people, it again will be an addition to the national income. Improvements in the level of GDP leads to enhancements in Economic growth. Here whatever externalities are faced by the country are not considerable as compared to the gains. Since tourism as the major economic sector in Cambodia, has no other alternative than preserving its archeological monuments and sites.
Tourism can be promoted in two ways - through films and through tourism itself. This is what Donald advocated. Intrinsic experience of anything can be explained through films. Hence, of historical events, heroes and monuments. Tourists are best promoters of any archeological site. So there is a need to preserve the site with its best manner to get a better promotion .
As per my opinion, film and tourism can help the Cambodian economy in its all terms .
